Record the master before choosing the edit grid.
A displayed subtitle frame grid and the source video’s actual frame rate answer different questions.
What to record
Keep the exact master filename, duration and source frame-rate evidence with the project. Separately record the grid used to move subtitle boundaries. A project can display a convenient editing grid while retaining source timing as seconds; that display is not evidence that the video was produced at that rate.
A concrete duration check
For 24,000 frames, the rational rate 24,000/1,001 frames per second gives 1,001 seconds. At 24/1 the same frame count gives 1,000 seconds. This arithmetic demonstrates why approximate labels need context. It does not identify the correct rate for an unknown video or authorize a speed change.
A useful review sequence
- Identify the actual source master and read its metadata.
- Record the subtitle edit grid independently.
- Check dialogue at the opening, middle and ending, plus known cut changes.
- Confirm any receiving timebase and delivery offset from the recipient.
Use the frame-duration calculator for arithmetic and the Master worksheet in the template workbook for evidence. Do not transcode or alter video speed merely to make labels match.
